Applications
Biosurfactants find application in the environmental protection, crude oil recovery, mining, agricultural, food processing, and health care industries. They have certain advantages over chemical surfactants. For example, some exhibit greater foaming ability. More generally and more important, as a class biosurfactants have lower toxicity, higher biodegradability, and better environmental compatibility, this last feature stemming in part from the use of plant-based carbon sources in the production process. Biosurfactants also maintain specific activity well within a large range of temperature, pH, and salinity.
